Fashion Through the Ages is a fashion show created by my close friend Räyya Gracy. The production was put together in one week and was shown at CMU Drama's 20th annual Playground Student Work Festival. I designed and constructed two garments for the show, one representing the Victorian period and one representing the future.

Process

For my first design design, I was inspired by old dolls and dresses from the Victorian period. I wanted to create a nightgown silhouette rather than a fitted waist. Originally, I sketched red nightgown, but when buying fabrics, I was drawn to a blue and white plaid. It was much softer, more innocent and doll-like than the red would be. I used 3 different kinds of lace around the neckline; I used a sheer lace with pearls over the chest and upper back, and 2 layers of scalloped lace directly below it. The neckpiece is made from an old wedding veil.
For my second design, my initial sketch took more of a “50s does future” approach, inspired by retrofuturism and characters like Barbarella. I couldn’t find the exact fabrics I wanted, so I found different fabrics that spoke to me and drew up a new sketch, letting the fabrics lead me. I landed on more of a futuristic pop star concept and achieved a very sleek and sexy metallic look with details of structured corsetry, armor, and long nails.
